Greenore Single Grain 8y

Glass: Adelphi / Spiegelau

Nose: Soft, gentle, slightly malty peaches. Wonderfully creamy nose.

Palate: Very smooth, very gentle. A lovely creamy nuttiness on the palate, but slightly watery and it fades quite quickly. Only to come back again in the back of the throat with a flavour of hazelnuts and malt. I find it quite amazing that the nose has a distinct fruitiness which I identify mainly as peaches, but the palate has no flavour of this at all. The flavour is more one of nuts and marzipan, with a slight hint of cognac in a very smooth gentle way.

Overall impression: A good, but rather unusual distinctly Irish dram which is easy-drinking and an "anytime" one.

What is it that makes Irish whiskey so distinctive?
The first time I tried this was tasted blind when a friend bought a bottle and asked me to tick boxes on a sheet.

I ticked Irish immediately, then grain, then<10yr
Whatever that aroma is, I like it - a lot!

N: Well that Irishness is here in abundance, and there's barley and a fairly complex fruitiness that I don't get as peaches but as something more exotic. Can't place it though.

P: As Malty says, the palate is very different and I agree on the hazelnuts, but I also get a little rubber balloon. Now, I'm particularly sensitive to sulphur normally and this balloon flavour would normally set alarm bells ringing but it is actually well-controlled and doesn't degenerate into sulphur at all.
It's sweet, smooth, creamy and delicious.

F: Fairly long on that Irish flavour and the nuts

Nose: It takes a wee while to open up (fresh bottle) but eventually loads of vanilla comes through with gentle cereal notes following. A nutty syrup in a latte. A ripe mango-like fruit note too but also some stewed pears.

Palate: Very sweet and creamy with a surprising fruitiness. Strawberries and cream (-flavoured sweets). A sparkle of spice and a dusting of cocoa. Getting watermelon now too.

Finish: Fairly long with chocolate and coffee.

Conclusion: Lovely stuff. I'm definitely becoming a big fan of single grain whisky. This isn't as complex and rich as the 15yo or 18yo but it's certainly a cracking dram and a worthy alternative to any malt.

Nose: Chemical, pencil erasers, vague lemon and wood shavings. Maybe a hint of coconut.
Taste: Rubbery (but not sulphury) with coconut and Lemsip. More fruity with a spot of water.
Finish: Very short before water, which lengthens and sweetens it.
Comments: Drinkable I suppose. I think I must have a different batch from the folks that have already posted on this whisky, because I don't find any of the charming things they cite.
