Glenfiddich Havana Reserve

Postby whiskyone » 16 Feb 2012, 16:59

Hi Everyone.

This is my first post, so I'd just like to say hello to all of you.

I just recently bought a selection of whiskies, among which was a bottle of Glenfiddich Havana Reserve.

I've been collecting whisky for a while now (small time amatuer).

A friend told me a while back, that if i ever came across a bottle of this I should buy it. It cost me around £90, which I suppose is about what it's worth ?

I've had a scout around on the web and I can't really find a great deal out about it, apart from the story about it being stopped from entering the U.S.

I suppose i'd just like to know what you fella's think of it, and if it's one I should hang on to. Perhaps someone could shed a little light as to the number of these produced and their current availability.

Any info or advice is welcome and appreciated.

I posted this question on another forum, and a kind member over there (from over here) recommended me to join up, and post my question here instead. So thanks again, you know who you are

Just read my last paragraph, and it seems very secretive. A bit like an episode of Allo Allo in places

Hi and welcome.

There is no real info on how many were produced as it was meant to be a pretty standard 21y offering in their range, but as you have discovered it was stopped and replaced by the "Gran Reserve" (I think it was called.) I believe this has also now been superceded by another 21y.

It has a nice story and yes, it is worth holding on to, but it is also an excellent whisky and well worth trying.
Here are my own tasting notes and if you skip around that linked page you'll find notes on another 21y which I tried in a whisky & chocolate tasting.

Hi there,

and welcome again.

The Glenfiddich 21yo as it is named now indeed saw the light of day as Havana Reserve first.

When the name was changed to Gran Reserva that was done because Havana Club which provided the rum casks

had late objections that their name was mentioned - or so the story went.

It had more to do with problems of selling something with a Cuban reference on the US market insiders say.

Then it has changed the name again to Glenfiddich 21yo mentioning the rum casks in the smaller print.

As it is said that Glenfiddich gets better the older it becomes and not many can afford the new 30yo - which is the next step in the standard range - it is the only Glenfiddich over 20 year old in a price range that is more or less affordable. Not that the 18yo is at a loss for anything but that 3 years more - and the rum probably - do something for the 21yo.

If yours is an original Havana Reserve bottling get a 21yo of the latest design and watch the prices got up for the Havana.

Greetings
