1978 suggestions

Postby stevep » 14 Feb 2012, 15:38

Hi All,

So, I was born in 1978, and I'm thinking about spending a little more than usual to get something from that year. It's a while yet, but maybe I'll keep it in store till I'm 40, something a little more special to open.

Anyone got any recommendations at all?

I was thinking maybe about the Balblair 1978, people seem to like it and it's not stupidly expensive. Not tried it before, but MoM has samples, so I might get one to try it first.

Cheers,

Steve

I'm also a child of 1978 (best year, even if Star Wars was released the year beforehand) and have been similarly looking.

The Balblair 1978 is good and is on my list to obtain for birthday stash. I've also picked up a Clan Denny Port Dundas (the 2nd cheapest '78 I've found yet) and a Glen Mhor (from an auction, cheapest 78 I've found). I've been considering some Douglas Laing Platinums, although they're a bit pricy for my liking without getting a taste first.

Thanks cowfish... '70's babies and proud. :-)

I hadn't even considered auctions, being new to the game as it were... could you give me a bit more info, maybe I'll keep an eye out.... I take it we're talking about something other than standard ebay type stuff?

Cheers!

Steve, try scotchwhiskyauctions.com run by forum member Bill Macintosh (toshie)
Also whiskyauction.com in Germany is very good - I've had a fair bit from there.

Glendronach SC 1978 batch 5 could be something. It's still available in Sweden but I don't know about the UK. Only 417 bottles so...

We got a bit of the 1978 Glendronach in the UK, but I ended up missing it. I think it's sold out in most places over here (we don't have it online at TWE but might have some in the shop) but the tasting notes and general quality of the other Glendronach single casks sold me.

I got some of the UK exclusive 1995 PX cask which made up for it :)

I don't know if my opinion matters, but I think Balblair 1978 is AWESOME (sorry for my american)

If you look for a great not sherried and AGED whisky where you can feel and taste the spicyness of age, give this one a shot

I remember a fine G&M bargain - Speyburn and/or Glenlossie, 43% I think but I might be getting confused with a Glenlossie 1977, all refill sherry casks too.

Hi All,

Thanks for so many good suggestions!
Cheers to Steffen for the Balblair recommendation, that's grand, I'm very tempted.
Also, thanks to mongo and Pete Smoke... those are much more my sort of prices. :-)

In fact... I'm just about to get a Bunnahabhain 10 Year Old 2000 (Adelphi) bottle which I loved recently from a sample... so the Bunna that mongo suggested might well be a winner. MoM also have a Bunnahabhain 32 Year Old 1978 - Mission (Murray McDavid) for a similar price, so a couple of options there for me.

Saying that... the Glen Grant also sounds great... god I wish I was rich. :-)

Cheers guys,

Steve

Hello stevep

I've just checked my tasting notes from The Glasgow Whisky Festival 2011 and I had tried the Balblair 1978 and rated it very highly, well worth it to celebrate with.

I too have tried the Balblair 1978 (actually quite recently - around Christmas time) and would recommend it! It is an exceptionally good whisky, and I think you would like it Steve as it delivers some gentle smoke amongst its other more dominant notes. I was extremely impressed and have been thinking of treating myself to a bottle, and I don't think it is stupidly expensive for what it is.

I hope you decide to get this one! :)

Hi All... so many decisions! I've now got two Bunna's in the cupboard, so with minesascotch and OB's recommendations, I think I'll go for the Balblair, and keep the other suggestions in reserve as and when I have any spare cash!

OB... thanks for your recommendation, I think you more than anyone on here knows my tastes best, so if you liked it, and reckon I will, then that's enough for me!

Also... minesascotch... nice to see someone local, welcome! I had thought Somerset was some sort of black hole for whisky, so good to see there's at least one other person around. ;-)

Have a good weekend everyone!

Cheers,

Steve

first of all, 78 sucks, 77 is best :D

You could check http://www.whiskybase.com, they have a tool to find out vintage bottlings. You might stumble upon something interesting.

Edit: d'oh I see the whiskybase site has already been suggested.

There is a Black Hole in Somerset when it comes to whisky, it is in my house, any whisky that enters can never get out.

You guys should try getting a bottle from MY birth year. 1951 is a helluva expensive dram.Coincidentally, we have a Knockando 1978 15 years old going in the next auction which starts next week.

I'm also from 78 so I've been putting a bit of a collection together. Have tried them all and think all are good or excellent:

- Ardbeg 1978/1997 - Very good
- Brora 1978/2011 - Very good
- Glen Garioch 1978 30yo - Excellent
- Glendronach 1978 cask 1040 - Very good
- Glendronach 1978 cask 1067 - Excellent
- Glenrothes 1978/2008 - Good
- Highland Park 1978 Vintage - Good
- Port Ellen 10th Release - Excellent

All will be opened on my birthdays and will be drunk and enjoyed thoroughly.

I'm also on the lookout for more '78's that can add to that list. :)
