Springbank - in black cube-shaped box

Postby Exciseman » 15 Feb 2012, 16:40

Whilst on my travels, I saw a cube-shaped black Springbank box on a high shelf. It didn't look big enough to contain a 70cl bottle, but I suppose that it could have just about done if it was sperical. Does this 'ring any bells' with anyone?

Could be a ceramic. They were in black cube boxes.

I'm not one to gush over packaging but those are really classy - well done. I think it's the black w/red that attracts my eye....& I know that is darned good whisky in the jug! Much better than the Irish whiskey that comes in the white jug.....that I always pass by because it looks so dorky.

I agree this is classy. I'd love to see the box though....

(I can't help saying that packaging is a topic that is fitting so very well into so many threads at the moment, and indeed this thread is another case in point.... ;) )
I must remember to forget....

I'll find (or take) a pic of the box...

They may look well but ceramic tends to allow whisky to evaoprate through the actual bottle/jug. Therefore probably best to drink quickly or not at all.

Had an old ceramic 12yo - the cork disintegrated when I tried to open it, but the whisky was excellent, although fragile like a lot of old whiskies. Had to be drunk up within a fortnight or so (not a great hardship).

I had a 12 jug that was in my father-in-law's cupboard, opened, for years.
He gave it to me and it was excellent. Well-glazed flask.

Don't worry Steve...

Intriguing. The only thing that troubles me is Nick's comment that the whisky can evaporate through the glazed ceramic. If true, then I could just be buying an empty (albeit good looking) bottle.

We tried a couple of these 21yo ceramics at a charity 21yo tasting (although Bruichladdich sent us a young Port Charlotte). There was evaporation and one jug seemed more popular than the other so the breathing may have compromised one- they are hand made so presumably thickness varies. I have the empty one so I could weigh it empty then filled with 70cl of 46% whisky, then you simply get the retailer to weigh theirs and we know if it is significantly lighter.

Like that's going to happen. But I'm up for it if they are...
