Chivas Brothers reopen Glen Keith

Postby kallaskander » 22 Feb 2012, 09:22

Hi there,

three snippets of information in these two articles

Diageo thinks of building another distillery

Pernod Ricard thinks in the same way.

Glen Keith will be reopend next year and there is no mentioning of Imperial

Of the latter I thought it was the last PR distillery not yet revived and the unlikliest to reopen.

But in boom times it could have had a chance... if it costs not more to reopen it than building

a new one from scratch.

Has it been sold in the meantime was it demolished?

That's a big if. By all accounts it's in a very sorry state. It might be most sensible to bulldoze it and rebuild on the site. Demolition may not be a simple matter at that.

Glen Keith is the only so-called "Mothballed" distillery in the Pernod Ricard portfolio.
Caperdonich, Inverleven & Lochside are all demolished.
Imperial is officially listed as "Closed" which normally means not in a fit state to reopen. As has been said I believe it's in a state of too much disrepair to reopen, but as for bulldozing it and building new on the site, well that's a possibility which could make sense.

I need to update my page a little, specifically the Irish section for Cooley, but if anyone's interested here's my "Who owns what" page which includes status and output figures.

true Mr T a big if...

I have never been even near Imperial so I have no clue. I only knew from reading she was for sale and that there was no bidder it seems.

In hindsight it might not pay off for PR to let it have fallen in disrepair so much. Her big stills could have done much in the way of producing malt for blending on short notice. If she had been kept in working order that is.
But who would have guessed the todays demand for whisky 20 years ago.

We will see where Pernod plan to build.

I have now updated this page to reflect Tamdhu being sold to Ian Macleod, Starlaw grain distillery & the change of Cooley ownership.
Hopefully everything is up to date now.

I wonder what Beam are going to do with the Kilbeggan Distillery. They have laid a load of people there this week. Very unfortunate. Hopefully they won't mothball the distillery.
