I have just hoovered up all the Whitney Houston stuff I could find on Amazon. I will ebay them over the coming days and make a fortune.

How Whitney Houston sang and whatever views people had of her singing, will now influence the nature of comments about her death and repercussions from it. Her death was sad because it was unnecessarily premature, but since she was a 'celebrity' her death (and the cause of it), unlike countless other deaths in the world, will receive public scrutiny as will her career in retrospect. This is, I also think, unnecessary. I personally didn't enjoy her performances (singing or acting) but I think she made a significant contribution to entertainment.

RIP Pedro, my brother's dog, named after Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez. As I recall, he was half something and half something else (yeah, I was paying attention). Chihuahua, maybe. All well and good when my brother went off to do his radio show; fell ill, taken to vet, sent to hospital, DOA. Shocking and upsetting, but he did not suffer long. My brother loved him, so I share his mourning.

David Kelly, 82, Irish actor with a long and distinguished list of screen and stage credits, perhaps known best to many of us as the naked motorcyclist in Waking Ned Devine.

I used to see him here and there in Dublin. A tiny slip of a man. He was great as Rashers in Strumpet City.

Lost another friend today. John Hester. A great man. 4 years my junior.

He's the fourth to go in six months. Dang, I'm weary of this. The threads are bare.

I'm sorry to hear about your 4 friends two-bit cowboy. I've been thinking about this a lot this winter since my father-in-law also lost 2 friends within a week; reminds me of what's important. Keep your friends close, share your whisky & make the best of now because we never know when we won't have that option.

Yeah, "what's important...."
